Redemption High Rye Bourbon Single Barrel
Redemption was founded by spirits-industry veterans Dave Schmier and Michael Kanbar on rye and bourbon sourced from the MGP distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana (now Ross & Squibb), bottled in small batches in Bardstown, Kentucky; Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits bought the brand in 2015. High Rye Bourbon is MGP's famous 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley recipe, a bourbon that sits right at the edge of the category, with nearly three times the rye of a standard bourbon mashbill and the spice to match. The Single Barrel Select bottlings take that whiskey one barrel at a time, non-chill-filtered, and bottle it at 105 proof (52.5% ABV) rather than the 92 proof of the regular High Rye, so each release varies with the barrel and carries more weight and oak. VinePair's review scored it 91 points and described an ice-cream-shop nose of crème brûlée, fudge and oak, followed by a palate where the rye spice and caraway take over, which is exactly what a high-rye bourbon should do. It's a bourbon for people who drink rye: pour it neat, or build a Manhattan or Old Fashioned where the 105 proof keeps the whiskey in charge.
